Special Envoy Huang Xia happy to meet Dr. Muyembe-Tamfum, the Congolese expert to first raise the alert on the Ebola virus in the DRC

Kinshasa, 30 September 2020 – Mr. Huang Xia, the UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region on 30 September 2020 met with Dr. Muyembe-Tamfum, the current Managing Director of the Congolese Institute for Biomedical Research. Dr. Muyembe-Tamfum is a Congolese microbiologist who was dispatched to Yambuku, a small village in the northern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the first outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) occurred in 1976, and he raised an alert about the disease. Since then, Dr. Muyembe-Tamfum has worked as an expert in tackling and controlling EVD. He and Mr. Xia discussed the need to increase the resilience of the countries of the region and the importance of building on the immense experience and capacities of experts.
