UN Special Envoy Commends President Faure Gnassingbé’s Role in Great Lakes Peace Efforts
Lomé, Togo, 4 August 2025 – Mr. Huang Xia, United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region, met with President Faure Gnassingbé of Togo in his capacity as African Union (AU) mediator for the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The meeting focused on recent developments in regional peace efforts, including the Washington Peace Agreement and the Doha Declaration of Principles. Mr. Xia commended President Gnassingbé for his leadership in this “delicate and essential mission” to address the root causes of instability in the Great Lakes region.
“The mediation entrusted to President Faure Gnassingbé is central to resolving the current crisis and to tackling the underlying drivers of instability,” said Mr. Xia. He reiterated the United Nations’ full support for the AU’s efforts, stressing the importance of coordinating all peace initiatives around this central mediation to strengthen its impact.
