Special Envoy Djinnit and President Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo call for renewed commitment to peace and security in the Great Lakes Region

Brazzaville, 20 June 2016 - Said Djinnit, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Great Lakes Region met with President Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo in Brazzaville to discuss issues related to peace and security in the region, including most recent developments. The Special Envoy, who had participated in the Summit of the leaders of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) in Luanda, Angola, on 14 June, took this opportunity to brief President Sassou Nguesso on the recent initiative of the representatives of the guarantors of the Peace, Security and cooperation (PSC) Framework Agreement for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the region to reinvigorate ongoing efforts aimed at neutralizing illegal armed groups still operating in eastern DRC. The two personalities also discussed ongoing efforts to support dialogue processes in Burundi and the DRC.
