The International Contact Group commits to support international and regional mediation efforts in DRC, Burundi

Stockholm, 4 May 2016 - Special Envoy Said Djinnit participated in a meeting by the International Contact Group (ICG) for the Great Lakes Region in Stockholm, Sweden, on 4 May 2016. The Special Envoy gave an overview of current political developments in the Great Lakes region, followed by briefings on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Burundi, respectively from Maman Sidikou, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the DRC, and Jamal Benomar, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on Conflict Prevention.

With regards to the DRC, the discussions were centered on the significant delays in the electoral calendar, the ongoing UN Electoral Assessment Mission in Kinshasa and what could be done to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). Further, views were exchanged on how the international community could support the African Union (AU)-facilitated national dialogue. Concerns were also raised on the shrinking political space and human rights violations, including the detention of political figures in the opposition.

Concerning Burundi, the ICG members welcomed Zambian former President Benjamin Mkapa's attempts to commence the East African Community (EAC)-led mediation efforts to resolve the political crisis, and committed to support these efforts to the fullest. It was further concluded that the Arusha Agreement (2002) remains crucial for peace and stability in the country.

France will take over the ICG Chair after Sweden, and the next meeting is expected to take place in Paris in early autumn.
