Nairobi, 3 June 2016 – The German Ambassador to Kenya, Jutta Frasch, met today in Nairobi with the United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region, Said Djinnit. The Special Envoy briefed Amb. Frasch on his mandate, and spoke about recent developments in the region, including the breakthrough regarding the implementation of the Nairobi Declarations signed in December 2012 confirming the dissolution of the ex-M23 Movement and providing for this rebel movement to become a political entity. The Government of the Republic of the Congo (DRC) has now officially agreed to recognize the ex-rebel movement as a political party.

Special Envoy Djinnit also briefed the German Ambassador on the continued support of his office to the African Union-facilitated dialogue in the DRC as well as its involvement with civil society groups, especially women and youth, with a view to addressing the root causes of conflict in the region. The Special Envoy finally informed the German Ambassador on the current status of his office resource mobilization efforts through the Trust Fund.
